The classic band t-shirt, think ‘The Rolling Stones’, ‘Guns ‘n’
Roses’ and ‘AC DC’, it’s been a indie-esque, grunge wardrobe staple for
decades. In recent years, even people who have probably never listened to the
music these bands have produced are sporting their branding and merchandise across
their chests, along with ripped skinny jeans and some heavy eyeliner to boot.
So it got me thinking about the alternatives to the band tee, what else is
there that people love to show they like and incorporate it into their fashion?
The answer? Super heroes.
Like band tees, they’re bold, they’re logoed and they’re
instantly recognisable. Worn right, they can be a funky and fun addition to
your wardrobe. I don’t often wear anything that has a bold logo design or
branding across the front, however I loved how this ‘Wonder Woman’ top from the
official DC Comics range looks when I paired it with simple white skinny Joni
jeans from Topshop and my vintage Mustang denim jacket which I bought from
Scarlett Ribbons in Durham City.

If you’re anything like me, when you were little, you were
fed a steady stream of Disney films over your young years. As a sociologist, I
can’t help but feel that these films may have given me a somewhat rosy glow and
idealised some of my expectations, however they provided (and sometimes still
do, I LOVE watching ‘Tangled’!) an unparalleled form of escapism, and I think
that in some ways, sci-fi fantasy in Marvel and DC comics does exactly the same
and that’s a great thing. We all need to be able to get caught up and lost in a
world that is far from our own and let our imagination be free.
What are your personal favourite slogan tees? What are they
in support of? I’d love to hear, so drop me a line in the comments below! Bilgi
